Toronto, Ontario — March 21, 2019 — Collision Repair has prepared the top four unbelievable stories of the week! From a new safety feature from Volvo to an unexpected wild animal ending up in someone’s vehicle, this week has been unbelievable!
Sunken Ship
An Italian container ship loaded with more than 2,000 vehicles caught on fire and sank last week off the coast of the French Atlantic. The crew in the boat were evacuated safely but the vehicles were destroyed. The worst loss of the bunch was four of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS models, as Porsche said that the production of this vehicle ended last February. But not to worry, the carmaker released in a statement that it will be reproducing those four vehicles.
Volvo’s Solution
Distracted driving is one of the most common reasons why people find themselves involved in collisions. As a solution to make cars even safer, Volvo has released an in-vehicle camera and sensor that will monitor the drivers to see if they are impaired behind the wheel or distracted. The camera will keep an eye on the driver and help the vehicle make the decision if it should intervene. The intervention could involve limiting the car’s speed, alerting the Volvo on-call assistance service and as a final course of action, actively slowing down and safely parking the car. The cameras and sensors will only interfere if they notice a lack of driver steering input, their eyes leaving the road and extreme weaving across lanes or slow reaction times. This new driver system is expected to start in the early 2020s.
Furry Friend
An Australian man had an unexpected surprise when he returned to his vehicle. After just stepping outside with his dog at a local vineyard, Tim Whitrow came back to his vehicle to find a koala bear sitting upright in the back seat of his car. While taking a video of this wild experience, Whitrow tried to get the animal out of the car. The koala wasn’t taking no for an answer and swatted Whitrow’s hand a couple of times. Then the koala climbed up to the front seat onto the dash to enjoy some air conditioning and creating some damage in the meantime with its long, strong claws. Eventually, the koala made its way out of the front passenger door and escaped into the bushes.
Erratic Driver
An erratic driver crashed into several cars and was swerving all over the roads near the Ottawa University campus on Wednesday. The driver is now in police custody. Several people reported the incident, and recorded what they saw on their phones. A video posted to Twitter shows a silver vehicle with extensive damage to the hood and front bumper aggressively making its way around a corner at high speed while the tires were squealing and smoking. Some even said they could smell the tires burning.
