Battles of Wit: Retail ‘sign wars’ gain popularity nationwide

Listowel, Ontario — What began as a game of zingy wordplay between a Listowel, Ontario, Speedy Auto Glass facility and the Dairy Queen restaurant next door has turned into a battle of wits between businesses across Canada.

The national game began in late April after Speedy Auto Glass launched a lighthearted jab at its DQ neighbours.

“Hey DQ, wanna have a sign war?” read Speedy Auto Glass Listowel’s initial proposal.

“You bet your glass we do,” DQ fired back.

Thus ensued a multi-day back-and-forth between the two businesses, which prompted several other local businesses to participate in the festivities—at first. Now, the trend has spread across the nation, with businesses from Charlottetown, P.E.I. to Victoria, B.C., and everywhere in between participating.

“There are thousands of signs on local businesses from our town alone to neighbouring towns and cities and counties,” said Trevor Cork, owner of the Listowel, Ont., Speedy Glass. “It absolutely blew up.”

Cork said he had the idea for the sign war after witnessing a similar attempt in Virginia, U.S., that had gone viral online.

“It’s been so uplifting,” he said. “We’re getting people stopping into the business just to say thanks for making them smile.” Has your business taken part in any recent sign wars? Send editor@collisionrepairmag.com pictures of your sign for a chance to be featured in an upcoming issue!
