Right to Repair Bill approved by House of Commons. Next stop, The Senate.

Ottawa, Ontario — This past week, Bill C-244 passed through the Canadian House of Commons with unanimous approval—a win for supporters of the right to repair.

The focus of Bill C-244 primarily concerns a Copyright Act that aims at permitting the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of Trusted Platform Module (TPM) protected products.

Currently, TPM is an independent component that monitors the state of a system and provides data protection using encryption. TPM technology is being targeted as OEMs could use this or similar methods to block access to important data systems and to effect repairs.

For Canadians, the passage of Bill C-244 into law would entrench the right to the direct repairs of many products, including their vehicles.

Since Bill C-244 has made it through the House of Commons, it will now go to the Senate to be reviewed.
