A new study finds Canadian automotive dealerships in need of staff

By CRM Staff

Ottawa, Ontario — June 7, 2018 —  Canadian collision repairers across Canada are not alone in their efforts to attract and hire skilled people. A recent survey by the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) finds 99.5 percent of survey respondents are looking to hire in a variety of positions, including management, parts and service, administration, accounting, marketing, IT, finance, human resources, and detailing.

“The survey reveals what we have been hearing anecdotally: that dealers across Canada will need to fill a variety of positions over the next several years, and in some cases, the need is already critical,” said CADA Marketing Specialist Astrid Mauger.

Canadian collision repairers are also faced with a staffing crisis as the gap between experienced senior repair technicians, including service technicians who perform mechanical repairs and are capable of handling innovative repairs, and young apprentice still in the early stages of learning grows to a critical state.  Actively pursuing skilled tradespeople and experienced front office staff to take on management, estimating and customer service roles, some independent owners and banner groups have taken to working with national and global headhunting firms despite having to pay costly finders fees; collaborating with local trades colleges; and posting job ads online promoting competitive wages, generous benefits and signing bonuses.

According to CADA,  83.7 percent of dealers will be looking to hire service technicians, while 70.5 percent said they will be hiring for sales and leasing positions. Currently, there are 150,000 people employed in the automotive dealers sector across Canada.

CADA conducted the survey with automotive dealers nationwide as part of its Auto Career Start program which aims to promote Canadian auto dealership career opportunities to recent graduates and people with prior work experience.
